Visas to stay in Italy

European Citizenship

Rules for EU citizens

If you are a citizen of a European Union (EU) country, Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Andorra, the Principality of Monaco, the Republic of San Marino, or the Vatican City, you can travel and stay freely in Italy for up to three months.

If your stay exceeds three months and is temporary, no special formalities are required, but you must have a valid passport or identity document to leave the country.

Visa for study purposes

If you are a citizen of a non-EU country and wish to study in Italy for more than 90 days, you are required to apply for a visa to enter the country.

Stays under 90 days: Check with the Italian Embassy or Consulate to see if a visa is required.

Stays over 90 days: You need to apply for a visa for the “Exchange and Mobility Program for study.”

  • Employed work: requires a job contract approved by your Italian employer.
  • Self-employment: you must demonstrate sufficient financial means and have an approved business plan.

  • Study purposes: for students enrolled in university courses or exchange programs.
  • Work purposes: for those employed under a regular contract or working as freelancers.
  • Family reunification: for those wishing to live in Italy with family members already resident here.

How to apply
You can submit your application at the Immigration Office of the relevant Police Headquarters (Questura). Visit the Italian Immigration Portal for detailed instructions.

Registration at the Municipality

If you intend to live in Ravenna for more than three months, you must register your residence with the Municipality. This is essential to access local services—such as the national health system—and to regularize your stay in Italy.

    • Valid identity document
    • Proof of sufficient income (employment contract, enrollment in a course of studies, or evidence of adequate financial means)
  2. For non-EU citizens
Once you have obtained your residence permit, you must register at the Municipal Registry Office to formalize your residency.
    Required documents:
    • Valid passport
    • Valid residence permit
    • Proof of domicile (e.g., rental agreement or declaration of hospitality)
